Summary

We live in an upside-down culture。 We wink at our vices as coping strategies while restricting our virtues to our online personas, where they won't interfere with our real lives。 And we wonder why we feel empty, exhausted, and directionless。 But why do we do things that we know are harmful for us?

Jonathan "JP" Pokluda wants you to know there's a better, more fulfilling way to live, and it doesn't involve looking inside yourself for the answers--because that's not where you'll find them。 With his signature wit and wisdom, he explains, unpacks, and expands on the age-old virtues we're told to pursue in Scripture: humility, forgiveness, generosity, diligence, self-control, authenticity, rest, and optimism。 Far from being restrictive, these God-given goals for living free us to love and live as we wish we would。

Practicing virtues is not just something you do--it's something done in you, slowly but surely transforming you into the person you were meant to be all along。 Whether you're 18 or 80, it's never too late to redefine what's important to you and reclaim a life of virtue。

There is something for everyone tucked away somewhere in these pages。 JP possesses a humble authority on understanding broken people; he shares his own story and the stories of those he has surrounded himself with, creating a space to be known。 Through a combined lens of current culture and ageless Biblical principles, this book tackles some of the most deep-seated kings (idols/strongholds/vices) of the human heart with hopes of dethroning the practices and lifestyles that lead to Death。 Yet, in There is something for everyone tucked away somewhere in these pages。 JP possesses a humble authority on understanding broken people; he shares his own story and the stories of those he has surrounded himself with, creating a space to be known。 Through a combined lens of current culture and ageless Biblical principles, this book tackles some of the most deep-seated kings (idols/strongholds/vices) of the human heart with hopes of dethroning the practices and lifestyles that lead to Death。 Yet, in a reflection of grace, gifts us the tools (verses/practical application) to both fight our vices and strengthen our virtues; leading us to a greater depth of Life! If you are looking for any of the following, "Why Do I Do?" holds all of these treasures:> The Gospel through a unique perspective> conviction that could inspire heart change> encouragement of healthy living> funny stories that disarm the fear of hard Truths> scriptural armor for the battles we face> something for YOUI think this isn't my favorite book in the world。。。 BUT! I truly believe it still holds great value for building The Kingdom of Heaven。 So, all in all, it is MORE than worth reading。 。。。more

JP has once again written a book that I just couldn’t set down。 Much like in his other books (which I also highly recommend), JP’s writing feels conversational and he is transparent in a way that is perfect for sharing the truth in love。 He writes about 10 common vices, corresponding virtues that are rooted in God’s word, and gives practical advice for how to lead a more fulfilling life。 You’ll even benefit from reading about the vices you don’t struggle with because of the way those chapters wi JP has once again written a book that I just couldn’t set down。 Much like in his other books (which I also highly recommend), JP’s writing feels conversational and he is transparent in a way that is perfect for sharing the truth in love。 He writes about 10 common vices, corresponding virtues that are rooted in God’s word, and gives practical advice for how to lead a more fulfilling life。 You’ll even benefit from reading about the vices you don’t struggle with because of the way those chapters will teach you to better understand the people who fight those battles。 One thing that you do want to do is read this book! 。。。more

The way Pokulda writes, it's like you're sitting and having a conversation with a mentor at a coffee shop。 It's conversational, with real-life examples, and I could barely put it down。 Applying these principles to your daily life will have your head and heart equipped to engage in the everyday battle against the flesh。 The way Pokulda writes, it's like you're sitting and having a conversation with a mentor at a coffee shop。 It's conversational, with real-life examples, and I could barely put it down。 Applying these principles to your daily life will have your head and heart equipped to engage in the everyday battle against the flesh。 。。。more

This book was incredible。 I have listened to and read a lot of things that JP has made and I have loved all of them but this was absolutely the best。 He comprehensively goes through 10 vices and their corresponding virtues so readers can get a better idea of why they do what they don't want to do and how they can replace that action with something positive。 A must read for all Christians。 This book was incredible。 I have listened to and read a lot of things that JP has made and I have loved all of them but this was absolutely the best。 He comprehensively goes through 10 vices and their corresponding virtues so readers can get a better idea of why they do what they don't want to do and how they can replace that action with something positive。 A must read for all Christians。 。。。more

JP has once again communicated tremendously well, the important factors that help believers live their lives in a manner that glorifies God。 I love the way he is a real person and relatable to the readers。 He has done so well in effectively labeling major sin issues with the profitable counterparts。 Another amazing read that I am grateful JP wrote

A classic JP book。 Although I have heard most of the content in his sermons over the years, the book does a great job of touching on multiple important topics in a concise and helpful way。 He brings a scriptural answer to some of peoples bigger questions。 The things taught in the book will help you examine the ways your living and I think will prompt believers in all stages to re-examine areas of their lives that need to be examined regularly。

A timely reminder that the cross of Christ empowers us to trade our vices with righteous living。 While culture would indoctrinate us with a passivity toward sin that at best robs us from the fullness of life with Jesus and at worst leads to death, JP continually redirects those lies with the truth of scripture。 Regardless of your struggle, you will glean wisdom for walking toward greater sanctification in the pages of this book。

I appreciate the lengths that JP goes through to point people to Jesus。 He keeps his message rooted in the Bible, but is unusually transparent about his past and current life。 This book contains scripture, accompanied by life experiences, to drive home the struggle between what we want to do and what we do。 The good news is we already have the victory in Jesus, and he does a great job of reminding us what the fruit of that can look like。

There’s many times I’ve asked my self “why do I want to do what I don’t want to do?” In this book JP goes over the Ancient Battles and the Modern Wars to help us understand this thing including busyness and how we perceive ourselves and others。 Every book JP writes gets better and better and this book has some strong convictions。 I recommend this book to all Christians as it helps people grow with their relationship with the Lord and to help them continue to walk with Christ。

You will not be able to not talk about this book after you read it! JP’s authenticity in speaking about his personal struggles makes this book more relatable。 His knowledge and use of scripture as ways to replace sins is both simple and convicting。 This is a book that will be read over and over, no matter your age or season of life。

I just finished reading Jonathan Pokluda’s new book Why Do I Do What I Do。 It is an excellent book。 I highly recommend it。 One of the things he says is we all have habits。 If we have bad habits we need to get rid of, we must replace them with good positive habits。 That is what the book is about。 It is about replacing bad habits, bad attitudes with good & positive habits。 I can’t recommend Pokluda’s new book highly enough。 Thank you so much Pastor Jonathan Pokluda for writing this important book。 I just finished reading Jonathan Pokluda’s new book Why Do I Do What I Do。 It is an excellent book。 I highly recommend it。 One of the things he says is we all have habits。 If we have bad habits we need to get rid of, we must replace them with good positive habits。 That is what the book is about。 It is about replacing bad habits, bad attitudes with good & positive habits。 I can’t recommend Pokluda’s new book highly enough。 Thank you so much Pastor Jonathan Pokluda for writing this important book。 I was blessed with the opportunity to review this book as part of your launch team。 It comes out in March。 I hope & pray as many people as possible will buy themselves a copy of the book & start reading it immediately。 God bless this book & those who read it。 Grace & Peace。 。。。more

Do you ever feel as though your sin controls you? Do you find yourself unable to stop returning to indulgence of your flesh time and time again? This book is for you。 JP brings his trademark honesty and humor to cover common vices plaguing the Church and the virtues to combat them。 He uses his own history of sin (in a refreshingly candid way), stories from his time in ministry, and biblical passages to illustrate his points。I'd highly recommend this book to my brothers and sisters in Christ。 Eve Do you ever feel as though your sin controls you? How many times have you asked, "Why do I do what I don't want to do?" Why am I still so stressed and exhausted? Why am I so critical of the people I love? Why do I hide behind a façade? Why do I choose wrong when I know what's right? This book identifies the most common vices and shows the virtues that provide a better way of life。 Becoming a better person is more than building good habits。 God can work in us to replace our sinful vices with godly virtues。 Pokluda categorizes these ten vices as five ancient battles and five modern wars, and identifies corresponding virtues so we can change the way we live。 These virtues show us who we want to be: humble, or grateful, or restful, or optimistic。 They also show us who we don't want to be and possibly who we already are: prideful or entitled or stressed out or cynical。 What I loved about this book is how Pokluda uses real-life stories to illustrate the vices。 I also appreciated the Bible passages he uses to back up each of his points, and the questions he asks to help his readers identify where they practice these vices in their own lives。 This book convicted me in almost every chapter and helped me to identify how to make changes。 It was empathetic and hard-hitting and freeing, all at the same time。 I plan to write the list of vices and virtues with a list of verses to accompany it and put it on my mirror at home as a daily reminder。 If there is any area to improve in this book, it would be in how to actually make these changes in your own life。 I felt like the purpose of this book was more to help you identify the vices and the virtues rather than to actually makes these changes。 It was to say, "Hey, you are living with these vices in your life。 Get closer to God and seek to live more soberly/humbly/diligently。" This was the part of the book that I struggled with most because I want to see clear life change, and I was ready for a 500-page manual! Overall, however, I absolutely loved this book。 I really admire JP outside of this book, and this gave me a new perspective on his ministry。 He asked questions that helped me self-evaluate。 I will be thinking and applying this far into the future。 5/5 for sure!! 。。。more
